iPhone OS 4.0: Now With Added Evil
(sorry for spammage)
…whereas this link: http://econsultancy.com/blog/5738-steve-jobs-will-kill-the-goose-that-laid-the-golden-egg — has the similar slant you took, whilst drawing the same conclusion I did.
That is: Jobs has always pursued pretty much the same strat (have you read that other lovely article about “the two steves”?). One time it failed miserably and he lost his company. Then he came back and saved it. Short-term memory dictates whatever he is doing now means he is right (and maybe was ahead of his time). But long-term memory reveals the grudge-holding and bull-headedness.
Or more simply: past success is no indicator of future success.
Either way as a pragmatic fanboi, i really hope he doesnt fuck this up. step 1: revamp the entire app approval process before the 3rd revision of their mobile device drops. really.

iPhone OS 4.0: Now With Added Evil
Heya James, I think the points you bring across (numbered and all) make a lotta sense. The question is how quickly will android penetration ramp up and furthermore, how will the app ecosystem work there? The issue being time. You may have already read this link: http://scobleizer.com/2010/04/11/is-2011-like-1994-for-apple-twitter-facebook-and-the-web/ — which highlights (amongst other cool thoughts) a few different takes on section 3.3.1
But in all his cunningness and need for retribution for past slights, Jobs is trying to lock developers in while he can and get some developers to build their companies to his ideal in order to increase the difficulty in porting apps. This is predication based on time in my mind. And of course, he gets to slap google and adobe in the face. petty style and all.
But I’d rather lean to the direction you laid out that the raft of developers for the mobile space now that he has under his thumb (and will happily form up a cult) may not be as large as he thinks. But what are they gonna do in the meantime?
(anyway, just wanted to post a related link to the discussion and put in my recession worthy 2 cents)

When I grow up I'd like to be more like a start-up
dont burst my bubble tim malbon! here i was thinking that the change will be so necessary that for people who just wanna “get shit done” there would be a space for them in agencies (and clients for that matter). Forward thinking, top-notch, a-list and it would happen in 5 years as I hope it.
So don’t you burst my bubble. Cuz in my weird sense of reality, only doing one thing, read: product, wouldnt be as fun as dong 3 (read brands/categories). Surely I’m not the only one who came to the agency world so some sense of diversity and rapid change?
Or do I need to take off the rose coloured diors?

A Manifesto for Agile Strategy: oxymoron or innovation?
yea dude, totally with it. even downloaded the handy chart cuz its exactly what I believe and talk about. It is I believe how we should do work (in lots of other areas as well, not just marketing). Question is, how can we sell it?
So this just makes me think we make sure we work this way for success but until I can figure out a way to sell this to a client (aka the people the folks in mktg dept have to sell to like procurement, board, etc) I’m wondering if we will still have to harp on past experiences, ask for trust, and make “firmer” plans than we actually plan to use. Or something.
